• Use the Wimshurst machine to charge the pail, then drop the chain in the pail.
  • Touch the wand inside the pail, then touch it to the electroscope. The vane does not deflect.
  • Touch the wand to the outside of the pail, then touch it to the electroscope. The vane deflects, showing charge resides on the outside of the pail only.
